Ligue 1 also rarely known as Division 1, is the top men's
professional football association of French Football League system. Its exact origin
dates back during 1932/33 as a national league. 20 teams compete in this
league, which follows the system of promotion and relegation from and to League
2(Division 2). The league title run starts from August and ends at May of next
year in which each teams play 38 matches in round robin format; home and away
matches. Most of the matches are held on Saturdays and Sundays. There is winter
break for two weeks before Christmas.
During the title race; clubs secures 3 points for a win, 1 point for equal score and gains only addition in playing experience time for losing the match. Clubs are ranked according to their points, goal difference and goals scored. When National Council for French Football Federation voted for professionalism in France for football in 1930, Division 1 was established with 20 clubs full of criteria for competing the French title. World War II had disturbed the pace of French football and football had to play safely only in regional areas. After the war had finished, French football was back in its pace with huge excitement and new energy within themselves. There has not been any hindrance since the conclusion of world war.
76 clubs have competed for Ligue one since its
establishment. In this league, AS Saint-Étienne have dominated this league with
10 league titles, but Paris Saint Germain have won their sixth title and are
also the current champions of France which is regarded as best club for Ligue 1
currently. Ligue 1 not only awards title for the club but also hosts Player of
the Month Awards, Player of the Year, Manager of the Year, Young Player of the
Year from both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. In European league ranking, it comes after
La Liga, Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A; in the fifth position. and is one of the most entertaining football league in Europe.
